"True Beauty Comes from Within"
Introduction to Subcision
Subcision is a minimally invasive dermatological procedure used to treat depressed acne scars and other types of scarring. It involves using a needle to release fibrous bands beneath scars that pull the overlying skin down. This will release tension on the scars and allows them to rise to the surrounding skin levels and improve their appearance.
Two is Better than One?
A combination approach is often most effective in treating scars. By using subcision to release scars from underlying tissue followed by other treatment modalities can bring out the best results for scar management. Multiple rounds of treatment are usually needed as the scar recovery is a progressive healing process, and the severity of scars will determine the number of sessions required.
Scar Therapy Options After Subcision
There are a number of other treatment options that we can combine with subcision synergistically to achieve better scar recovery:
Laser Therapy
Cosmetic lasers like ablative and non ablative lasers are used to boost collagen formation. Ablative lasers vaporize the outer layer of skin to spur collagen remodeling and production. Non ablative lasers heat lower skin layers without harming the outer layer of skin to stimulate collagen production. Different types of lasers are typically required for significant improvement of scars.
Microneedling
Microneedling by using a device with fine needles to roll over the skin to create tiny puncture wounds spurring collagen production and the body’s natural healing process. Microneedling is good for shallow and moderate scars. Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is also best performed together with microneedling as it is rich in growth factors to stimulate skin and scar recovery.
Biostimulator injection
Biostimulator injections are made out of biocompatible DNA fragments (polynucleotides,PN) or biocompatible calcium hydroxyapatite that help to improve the physiological condition of skin tissues. This is done by delivering the polynucleotide directly to dermal layer of skin via injection. These substances will stimulate your body’s natural production of collagen, a protein that gives skin its firmness and elasticity. Commonly used biostimulator injections are Radiesse, Rejuran and Plinest. We will be able to advise you on the most suitable option upon assessment of your scar.
Microdermabrasion
This is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a handheld device to remove the outermost layer of the skin. The device typically uses a diamond tip or a stream of fine crystals to perform the exfoliation. At Dream Clinic, we provide negative vacuum suction with diamond tip combination to achieve a gentle yet effective microdermabrasion. The procedure is typically painless and does not require anesthesia. The duration of the procedure typically takes around 30 minutes only and it is often used for shallow scars.
Benefits and Risks of Subcision
One who undergoes subcision and other scar therapies can be rest assured that there is minimal downtime and recovery period. Patients can return to normal activities almost immediately after the treatment. There is a low risk of side effects which is usually mild and temporary, including redness, swelling or bruising at the treatment sites.
